Town buys Avery Street property to use in North Garner plan

In a special session held Monday, the Town of Garner approved acquisition of nearly an acre of land in North Garner from Habitat of Humanity of Wake County. The Town plans to buy and hold the parcel to use in implementing the North Garner Plan.

The Town already owns other property nearby.  Other assets include Garner Historic Auditorium, Avery Street Gym, and the Avery Street classroom annex.  The new parcel is adjacent to the Avery Street facilities.

“The Town of Garner is working cooperatively with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County to identify some other parcels of land that will be used to construct as many as three future homes in the Garner area,” said Town Manager Hardin Watkins in a statement released early Monday evening.

The town will pay $75,850 for the .823-acre property at the corner of Avery Street and North Garner Road.  The parcel is presently undeveloped.

Downtown march in response to Carlyle’s death

The Wake County Domestic Violence Task Force is inviting the community to participate in a silent march in downtown Raleigh in response to the first domestic violence-related homicide of 2009 in Wake County.

The march is in response to the shooting death of June P. Carlyle, 49, in Garner on February 24. Tuesday’s march is the first silent march led by the Wake County Domestic Violence Task Force. A march will take place on a Tuesday after every domestic violence homicide in Wake County.

Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias, 44, has been charged with first-degree murder by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, in connection with Carlyle’s death. Authorities say the incident was a domestic dispute.

Organizers want to raise awareness about domestic violence and the local programs and services available to victims and their families.

Garner Magnet High School is one of ten Wake schools that have the program in place, according to published reports.

At least one Garner Town Council member has voiced interest in providing some town funds to keep the program afloat if it is cut.
