Downtown march in response to Carlyle’s death

The Wake County Domestic Violence Task Force is inviting the community to participate in a silent march in downtown Raleigh in response to the first domestic violence-related homicide of 2009 in Wake County.

The march is in response to the shooting death of June P. Carlyle, 49, in Garner on February 24. Tuesday’s march is the first silent march led by the Wake County Domestic Violence Task Force. A march will take place on a Tuesday after every domestic violence homicide in Wake County.

Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias, 44, has been charged with first-degree murder by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, in connection with Carlyle’s death. Authorities say the incident was a domestic dispute.

Organizers want to raise awareness about domestic violence and the local programs and services available to victims and their families.

There were six domestic violence homicides in Wake County in 2008, according to the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Police looking into spree of car break-ins in Lakemoor

The Garner Police Department is investigating thirteen car break-ins which occurred overnight in the Lakemoor Subdivision. In each instance, the victim vehicle was left unlocked.  Items stolen included GPS systems, car radios, wallets, and cash. At this time there is no known suspect information.

Residents are urged to take simple precautions to protect their property.  Vehicle owners are reminded to lock their cars and remove valuables from them.  If the valuables cannot be removed from the car, owners should at least lock valuables in the trunk or place them out of sight. Authorities encourage owners to create a list of make, brand, and serial numbers for any items that are left in the car.

911 caller: Orduna found unconscious and bleeding on roadside

Orduna died around 11 p.m. that evening. A preliminary autopsy report says the teen’s injuries were consistent with those one would receive from leaving a vehicle.

The man police say shot and killed his boss and ex-girlfriend outside her Creech Road home Feb. 24 appeared in court for the first time Monday afternoon.

Jose Manual Valdez-Masias stood before Wake County District Court Judge Jennifer Knox on first-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing June P. Carlyle last Tuesday morning.

After having his name called, Valdez-Masias, 44, stepped slowly into the Wake County Public Safety Center court room in a striped jailhouse jumpsuit.

A large surgical scar wound around his partially shaven skull and down the side of his face.

In warrants issued to investigators, witnesses say the Garner man shot Carlyle in the face before turning to shoot himself in the head.

Through an interpreter, Valdez-Masias quietly asked in Spanish for a court-appointed attorney. Knox granted the request.

He also asked whether bond would be set.

“I won’t be able to work,” he said, through the interpreter.

Knox denied bond. Valdez-Masias will remain in custody as the case proceeds, she said. The charges carry the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty.

His next court date is Mar. 23.

Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias will make his first court appearance Monday, according to published reports.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office has charged the 44-year-old Garner resident with murdering June P. Carlyle outside her Creech Road residence early Tuesday. Valdez-Masias worked for Carlyle’s cleaning business. The two had dated until a few months ago.

Last Tuesday morning, Valdez-Masias showed up at Carlyle’s home and allegedly shot her in the head, according to authorities. 

Note: Official reports and those from various media have differed in describing where Valdez-Masias shot himself.

He was released from WakeMed on Friday.

Ex-Boyfriend charged with murder in Creech Road slaying

The Wake County Sheriff describes the shooting that occurred last Tuesday morning in North Garner as a domestic dispute, according to published reports.

The incident resulted in the death of 49-year-old Garner woman June P. Carlyle. Authorities allege that Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias, 44, also of Garner, shot Carlyle in the face and then shot himself. He remains alive and has been charged with murder.

The incident happened outside of Carlyle’s home at 800 Creech Road.

In response, authorities placed nearby Creech Road Elementary School under a brief lockdown before most students arrived.

Services for Carlyle are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Police question witness accounts in Orduna case

N&O crime reporter Thomasi McDonald reports that investigators are looking into the statements of other people at the party where Orduna was last seen alive.

Authorities believe the 18-year-old Texas woman got into a fight with another woman at a party on Monday evening. As a result of the altercation, she and Spencer Bolick left the house, which is rented by Bolick, and drove off. Investigators say it now appears Bolick was talking to the other woman via phone when Orduna left the vehicle.

Orduna died Tuesday evening from injuries related to a major head trauma that coroners say is consistent with leaving a moving vehicle.

WCSO investigates shooting near Creech Road, lockdown lifted

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting near Creech Road Elementary. Earlier today, the investigation led authorities to place the school under a brief lockdown. The measure has since been lifted, reports NBC-17.

ABC 11 reports that as of 9 a.m., the Garner Elementary school is under “Code Yellow” status following an apparent shooting that occurred near the school.
