Cook named principal at Garner Magnet High School

On Tuesday, the county school board named Drew Cook as the new principal of Garner Magnet High School, says  chair Rosa Gill. The announcement comes more than a month after the school’s previous principal Michael Holton resigned, citing health issues.

Gill says board members relied on the recommendation of area superintendent Lloyd Gardner in approving Cook’s hiring.

“We didn’t get any information on the other candidates. We were told that he was the administration’s choice,” Gill said.

Since the resignation, Cook has served as interim principal at Garner, she said. He is also an alum of the school.

Note: An earlier version of this report incorrectly said that the school board approved Cook’s hire today. The board voted Tuesday evening.

WCPSS: Search for new principal underway

Michael Holton (pictured) resigned as principal of Garner High School on Tuesday. Wake County Public School System say they do not know why he resigned suddenly. In published reports, Holton cited ongoing health issues that had forced him to miss a significant amount of time.

”The admistrative team is running the daily operations of the school,” said Greg Thomas, a spokesman for Wake County Public Schools.

WCPSS has had two dozen principals system-wide that have retired, resigned or moved to different schools during the last two years.

The search for a new principal has begun, Thomas said. Southern Wake area superintendent Lloyd Gardner will head the selection process. He will be responsible for bringing a recommendation for a successor to the county school board.

Including Holton (above), Garner High has had three principals in the last decade.

Garner High Principal resigns because of health issues, N&O reports

Michael Holton, GMHS’s principal since 2006, has resigned because he needs time to address health issues, reports the N&O. Previously, he had been the principal at East Garner Middle since 2003, and an assistant at Enloe High School in Raleigh before then.
