Because of proposed state budget cuts, Wake County Public School System is looking to reduce expenses. One possibility they are considering is cutting a program that helps students prepare to enter the job market.
Garner Magnet High School is one of ten Wake schools that have the program in place, according to published reports.
At least one Garner Town Council member has voiced interest in providing some town funds to keep the program afloat if it is cut.
Despite its rapid growth and high unemployment rate, North Carolina lags behind most states nationwide in the stimulus money it is receiving per person for transportation, reports the News and Observer.
The town of Garner hopes some of the more than $800 million going to the state for roads and transit will help keep projects like the Timber Drive East extension on schedule.
Before the downturn, the roadway was scheduled to be let in September 2009 and to open by 2011.

The Garner Police Department is in line to receive $46,626 in federal stimulus money, according to published reports. The funds are included in a $56.3 million allocation to North Carolina for law enforcement. More than half of the money will go to the state, the rest will be distributed directly to local agencies like the GPD.

Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias will appear Monday in a Wake County Court room on charges of murdering his ex-girlfriend and boss June P. Carlyle.
Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias will make his first court appearance Monday, according to published reports.
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office has charged the 44-year-old Garner resident with murdering June P. Carlyle outside her Creech Road residence early Tuesday. Valdez-Masias worked for Carlyle’s cleaning business. The two had dated until a few months ago.
Last Tuesday morning, Valdez-Masias showed up at Carlyle’s home and allegedly shot her in the head, according to authorities.
Note: Official reports and those from various media have differed in describing where Valdez-Masias shot himself.
He was released from WakeMed on Friday.

The Wake County Sheriff describes the shooting that occurred last Tuesday morning in North Garner as a domestic dispute, according to published reports.
The incident resulted in the death of 49-year-old Garner woman June P. Carlyle. Authorities allege that Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias, 44, also of Garner, shot Carlyle in the face and then shot himself. He remains alive and has been charged with murder.
The incident happened outside of Carlyle’s home at 800 Creech Road.
In response, authorities placed nearby Creech Road Elementary School under a brief lockdown before most students arrived.
Services for Carlyle are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
